Talamasca wasn't very good
I usually don't like to lead with negative words, but that's my honest thought each time I think back on episode one.
For those who don't know, it was an AMC original series inspired by the Ann Rice novel series, based on the secret supernatural world of humans and vampires.
I've never read it or watched the first INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE movie, but I'm quite fond of QUEEN OF THE DAMNED (it's one of those rare, so imperfect that it's good, movies).
Because the Talamasca are featured in that movie, but scarcely, I was quite thrilled to learn of a series spinoff for them. And of course I waited until it was streaming on an app I already subscribed to (sorry not sorry AMC, but no new subscriptions for me).
Episode one was a continuous tonal shift.
The opening scene started intriguing but stretched on for way too long without any dialogue.
The main character was played by an actor who looked another more well-known actor.
I never could quite tell if his character and the woman who was his recruiter/mentor were supposed to have a sexual tension between them or if that's how the director wanted the tone to be (not that the characters actually were attracted to each other). Odd.
The first episode sets him up as a double-agent for a possible hostile internal takeover. In the middle of that, of course he uncovers a decades old plot of another forgotten internal conspiracy.
Lots of questions opened, none of which I was interested in clicking on episode two to continue investing in.
But at least my preview was free and no new subscription to remember to cancel, so there's that.
