The Reel Diary

They changed the view count metric but I didn't notice anything

About less than a month ago, YouTube made the announcement that they were changing how they captured and counted views on long format content.

Like everyone else, I tuned into the drama and listened carefully on (one) of their official channels.

A guy I've never heard of (so sorry but I didn't really set my attention to the creator side of YouTube until very recently) but who was apparently THE GUY to go from G league to full C-suite access, and who is the current public-facing representative on behalf of the network, arrived on screen with straight face and even-tones voice to explain everything. You know the expression, the very kindly and humble uncle, who tries to straighten out the escalating disagreement at the table between parents and kids.

To shorten the story and hurry up the details, (almost) any view past the first frame counts. So, like a fractal second, enough for a sticky thumb to receive angry orders to immediately scroll past the bot content. Haha, too late, you already gave them a view chef's kiss

Oh, and the rumored 30 second rule was a myth (mostly) (sorta) (probably yes, but we can't talk about that anymore, just act like that was never a thing).

The wailing and gnashing of teeth immediately followed.

The existential dread dripped down the comments.

How will we know what content is good now? Like elite high quality TS, not like those other channels...you know, the bot slop. Of course all struggling channels are bots, everyone knows this, right? Right:/ (Choose one: a. side-eye; b. eye roll)

As the moment loomed, with hands clenched tight and noses pressed to the screen, a collective inhaled breath hovered above us all, and then...nothing happened.

Apparently, the network missed the actual go-live date and flipped the new switch a few days later.

a Nervous Fart noise echoes across the digital multipurpose room. End scene.

The delayed timing makes me wonder though.

Tbc.
